The Myth Behind the Chinese Zodiac The myth behind how the animals became a part of the Chinese zodiac has many different versions. This is normal for a story that has been told over and over and passed down through many generations and a variety of people. There is, however, a small snippet of the story that has stayed the same as it has been told and retold. The twelve animals that are a part of the Chinese zodiac, were invited and those that came were incorporated into the Chinese zodiac. In one version of the story, Buddha invited the animals to be with him as he passed from this world. In another version of the story, the Jade Emperor invited the animals to attend a birthday party. There are also differences in how the animals were invited to attend the events. In one version of the invitation, all of the animals were invited to a feast. In another version, the animals were invited to have a race. The first twelve animals that crossed the finish line were those that would be incorporated into the Chinese zodiac. In this way, the order in which the animals crossed the finish line were also the order in which the animals were positioned on the zodiac.
